Re: Quotes

Few in the West know his first name, but just about everyone on Earth knows his last name. He started out repairing bicycles in his fathers blacksmith shop, and moved on to making piston rings, from there he started building motorcycles, and then cars, now his company makes everything from jet skis to jet planes, and even robots.

Re: Quotes

Although these word were written over two hundred years ago, they are still relevant today; and still a work in progress.
~
“When it shall be said in any country in the world my poor are happy; neither ignorance nor distress is to be found among them; my jails are empty of prisoners, my streets of beggars; the aged are not in want; the taxes are not oppressive; the rational world is my friend, because I am a friend of its happiness: When these things can be said, there may that country boast its Constitution and its Government” Thomas Paine (Rights of Man)

Re: Quotes

This was a poem left in rememberance for a friend of mine, his name is on 'The Wall' panel 7w, line 24.
~
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.
-

Re: Quotes

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered "Man.... Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived."

Re: Quotes

“What nobody tells people who are beginners — and I really wish someone had told this to me . . . is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, and it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not.

But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know it’s normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story.

It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

Today is the birthday of Douglas Adams.  So many good lines, but this one I love:

Re: Quotes

The Story
-
For those who don't know, this is a famous story that has repeatedly been told around acting circles. The story is that when Dustin Hoffman was involved with the movie Marathon Man, his character was depicted as looking like he had stayed awake for three nights. Dustin, being a method actor, decided to stay up for three nights in real life in order for it to look more realistic. When he came to the set, Laurence Olivier (An actor whom some considered to be one of the greatest in the world) asked him why he looked so tired and Dustin told him. Then Olivier pauses for a moment, then made the famous statement, "Try acting, dear boy...it's much easier."

"The silver Swan, who living had no Note, when Death approached, unlocked her silent throat. Leaning her breast against the reedy shore, thus sang her first and last, and sang no more: Farewell, all joys! O Death, come close mine eyes! More Geese than Swans now live, more Fools than Wise." Allen I have a friend who is dying of cancer. He has always been a fan of tall sailing ships, so several of his friends have arranged for him to go on one last day trip aboard his favorite tall ship. His death is not far off, and when he passes it is his wish to be cremated, have his ashes mixed with gunpowder and then blasted out to sea in a full broadside from his favorite ship. All those who attend his funeral are being requested to dress as pirates, all but the Coast Guard Honor Guard who will provide one last salute to an old comrade in arms. This cruise will be my friends 'Swan Song' so to speak. The quote above is from Orlando Gibbons most famous madrigal 'The Silver Swan' and it reminded me of my friend.

that seems like a fine send off.  I think Hunter S Thompson had something like that done too - just the canon part.
